Stephen Jarvis is the author of the critically lauded Death & Mr Pickwick, published by Jonathan Cape/Vintage in the UK and Farrar Straus & Giroux in the US.

Stephen says of himself:

I was born in 1958, in Romford, Essex, and might have become an economist. However, at Oxford University, where I pursued graduate studies, a discussion about a hypothetical economy with an infinite number of consumers put me off economics for life.

Drifting into an office job at a British industrial company, I found the work so dull that, in order to enliven my existence, I started doing unusual things at the weekend. So, for instance, I went on a flying trapeze, I walked on red-hot coals, I was hypnotised and went back to previous lives, I entered the British Snuff-Taking Championships – one thing after another, the more bizarre the better. This led to numerous articles, many radio appearances and eventually two books about my experiences, The Bizarre Leisure Book and The Ultimate Guide to Unusual Leisure. With my wife, Elaine, I also became the world’s leading expert on kissing, and together we wrote The Kissing Companion. (All published by Robson Books.)
